More than 60 percent of local high-school students spend less than 30 minutes a day doing physical exercise, said a political advisor in Central China's Hunan province.

Deng Lixin, a member of the Hunan provincial committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, conducted a survey on the students' fitness levels.

He and some other political advisers visited 73 high schools in the province from July 2010 to January 2012, according to a report in the Changsha Evening News.

Deng expressed his worries toward the weak fitness levels of high-school students on Tuesday during the provincial CPPCC committee's annual session.

He said that 41.4 percent of the high schools have only one physical education class a week, while 51.9 percent of high-school students have never done physical exercise after classes, said the report.

The education authorities should attach more importance to the students' physical development and high school heads should be punished if the students don't exercise enough, Deng said.
