Ministry rejects radiation allegations

2013-01-15 10:30 chinadaily.com.cn     Web Editor: Wang YuXia comment

An online post claiming that China's high-speed trains emit heavy radiation and cause many attendants to resign due to health hazards was pure fabrication, the Ministry of Railways said on its micro blog on Jan 15.

The electromagnetic field on a high-speed train meets national requirements and has no harmful effect on attendants' health. All compartments and the driver's cab are under year-round monitoring, the micro blog entry said, citing an official in charge of the matter at the ministry. It did not identify the official.

Railway authorities have not heard any reports of high-speed train attendants suffering from infertility or miscarriage. A collective resignation of attendants did not happen, the entry said.

The ministry's response came after a recent online post caused wide concern over the possible perils of radiation on high-speed trains.

The first post warned people to be cautious when taking the trains. It said new attendants had recently been recruited to replace staff who had quit after suffering from infertility or miscarriage.

The post was later deleted.
