China continued their stunning momentum at the 2012 London Olympics after grabbing 51 gold medals four years ago in Beijing. Among those rising stars who lifted China to a 38-gold success in London was Ye Shiwen, with two golds.

Ye was expected to give China a boost in the pool at the 2012 London Olympics. On Day Two, the 17-year-old shaved 2 seconds in the third heat of the Women's 400m Individual Medley, surpassing her previous best at the 2010 Asian Games.

She cruised to win gold in the final, shaving 3 seconds to break the world record. In the 200 meter individual medley, a significant lead gave her an easy victory. Her phenomenal success gave rise to speculation outside China about doping. But British Olympic Association chairman Colin Moynihan said that Ye had passed drug tests and deserved recognition for her talent.

Ye became the focus in China after rising to the occasion at the London Games. She won the 200 meter individual medley and 400 meter individual medley at the 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup in Beijing. She retained the momentum to finish first in the 200-meter individual medley at the 2012 World Championships for a perfect end to the year.
