Jimmy Carter unveiled a bronze statue of William Edward Macklin who founded the hospital in 1892. Macklin was a missionary of Disciples of Christ from the United States, so the hospital was formerly known as Nanjing Christian Hospital.

It was the first hospital in the city specializing in western medicine. To celebrate the the anniversary, a series of medical seminars will be held in the next few days. Jimmy Carter also delivered a speech at Saturday's ceremony.
