Some people have dreams of becoming a rock star, but others just want to inspire through their music. Today we'll meet a young Tibetan musician, who used to be a famous singer-songwriter in Lhasa, but has given up his solo career to let more people get closer to their dreams.

Meet Drikung Dzawang. He is one of the earliest Tibetan singers that was influenced by western popular music. His self-released albums have been sold tens of thousand copies in Tibet alone, which was a pretty impressive achievement.

However, he's been away from lime lights for a while. He founded a song and dance troupe based in his hometown, Maizhokunggar County near Lhasa, and is trying to support more grassroot talents. The lack of funds limited them to this small ballroom for daily practice, but their hearts are not grounded.

Drikung Dzawang said, "We spend most of our time here rehearsing, sometimes host song and dance shows here too, trying to make some money by selling tickets. It's a very small venue, but it's our home. We started our troupe here. "

Back in 2008, several local teenagers found him, hoping to learn singing and songwriting. That was when the singer had the idea of starting an art troupe in mind. Four years later, he has spent almost every penny of his savings purchasing costumes, musical instruments and covering travel expenses, but most importantly, he takes care of the youngsters.

Drikung Dzawang said, "Many of them have never left Lhasa regions before, so it's thrilling and dangerous at the same time for them to travel far. I am obliged to look after them, and keep them away from harm."

Phurbu Tsering, dancer, said, "I am so lucky to be part of this troupe. Drikung Dzawang is not only an artist, but our tutor. When I was accepted, he said that to be a decent person is much more important than singing and dancing."

But the hard work is paying off. Several original dance performances from the troupe are selected to take part in national-level spring festival galas, and they have won a few talent competitions in southwestern China as well.

Drikung Dzawang may have given up his solo career, but he has helped many more youngsters like him to reach the world outside.
