A 28-year-old Japanese student at Fudan University fell from a foreign student dormitory and was found lying on a second floor balcony at 9 am Monday, police said.

Students reported the incident to university authorities after discovering the unidentified woman lying on the balcony, according to a source at the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau who asked to remain anonymous.

The student was immediately sent to the nearby Changhai Hospital affiliated with the Second Military Medical University, according to a report on Eastday.com.

She was in stable condition Monday, but remained in a coma, the report said.

No one witnessed the fall, so police don't know when she fell or from which floor, the police source said. They also don't know if she resided in the building.

"There were no signs of a physical struggle on her body," the source told the Global Times. "It is unclear how she fell."

The case remains under investigation.

Fudan University officials refused Monday to disclose more information about the incident.
