A 38-year-old man surnamed Wu from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, burned himself with gasoline at his ex-girlfriend's home in Qingdao, Shandong Province, after she turned down his proposal of marriage last Friday. He was sent to the hospital with burns over 60 percent of his skin and is in critical condition.

Last year, Wu met a young woman in Nanchang and the two soon fell in love. But after a while, she decided to end the relationship and moved back to her hometown of Qingdao.

Wu said that he loved her very much and had hoped to solve the problems between them by proposing to her. On Friday, he drove to Qingdao from Nanchang with a betrothal gift of money for his proposal.

When Wu reached the woman's home, he proposed marriage to her in front of her family, but his ex-girlfriend turned him down firmly. Wu then threatened suicide if she didn't marry him.

The young woman and her family all thought he was joking until suddenly Wu revealed a bottle of gasoline he'd carried with him and set himself on fire. The frightened witnesses immediately called the police and tried to extinguish the fire that consumed Wu. Police and firemen rushed to the scene and finally the fire was put out. Wu was quickly sent to the hospital in an ambulance.

The doctor said that 60 percent of Wu's skin was damaged, mostly with second- and third-degree burns. Despite his severe injuries, Wu repeatedly tried to refuse treatment, shouting, "Leave me alone! I don't want to live anymore. Let me die!"

Wu's family arrived in Qingdao and were told by doctors that his life was still in danger. He has been in the intensive care unit since Saturday.
