47-year-old Chinese sailor Guo Chuan has embarked on the journey of a lifetime. Guo was setting sail from his hometown of Qingdao on Sunday as he attempts to sail solo around the world.

Guo is one of China's most accomplished sailors, as he previously became the first Chinese to traverse both the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean by himself and is also the first Chinese to take part in the Volvo Around-The-World Ocean race.

The journey will take Guo an estimated 130 days to complete and will see him cover 21,600 nautical miles. Guo's route will see him pilot his yacht across the Pacific Ocean and then down to Cape Horn off the coast of South Africa before crossing into the Atlantic Ocean.

He will then pass the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, head past Indonesia and then return to his starting point in Qingdao. Guo will eat a steady diet of dehydrated food during the voyage, and use a desalinization unit for drinking water.
