Hurricane Sandy grounds U.S.-China flights

Chinese airlines have delayed or canceled flights to and from the East Coast of the United States as the powerful storm Sandy has disrupted services in U.S. airports.

China Eastern Airlines said Wednesday that it has postponed the MU587 supplementary flight for Tuesday, as John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York opened to only limited services and was not receiving supplementary flights as of Wednesday.

Air China has also called off its supplementary flights to New York after delaying the flights on Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday's regular flight took off on schedule around 2:00 p.m. Beijing Time.

Sandy, which made landfall Monday night in New Jersey, has devastated the Jersey Shore, leaving streets flooded, homes abandoned and dozens dead. Tens of thousands of flights have been canceled as affected airports have suspended services.

Two of the area's major airports -- John F. Kennedy International in New York and Newark Liberty International -- announced that they would reopen to limited service on Wednesday local time.
