Driver’s legs amputated after collision

A city bus driver's legs had to be amputated following a collision with a flatbed truck Sunday afternoon in Jiading district, local police reported.

Police said the collision occurred when one of the truck's tires blew out on a bridge on the Baoan Highway, according to a report on the news website Xinmin.cn. As the truck pulled over, the bus rammed into it from behind.

The impact of the crash launched several of the iron rails lying on the flatbed into the front of the bus. "The bus's windshield was broken and the rails were sticking out of the vehicle. The driver's seat was seriously damaged," a witness surnamed Zhao told the Global Times.

The rails almost severed the driver's legs, said a nurse from Jiading District Central Hospital's emergency department. "His legs were amputated after he arrived here," she told the Global Times.

One other passenger was seriously injured. The bus was carrying 46 passengers, most of whom were injured. "I saw passengers exiting the bus and the majority of them had minor injuries. Some were being dragged out. There was one woman whose head was covered in blood," the witness said.

All of the passengers were sent to two nearby hospitals after the collision, who were all in stable condition by Sunday evening.

Police were continuing to investigate the crash Sunday. "We aren't sure whether the truck was overloaded," said Xu Bo, press officer for Jiading police.
