The main stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, known as the Bird's Nest, has been picked as the venue for the world athletics championships in 2015, IAAF president Lamine Diack confirmed on Tuesday.

Diack, who is here heading an IAAF team on an inspection visit, voiced his confidence in Beijing organizers' capability after revisiting the Bird's Nest which witnessed many wonderful performances during the 2008 Olympics.

"With a TV audience of 8 billion and more than 200 countries (regions) and 2000 athletes likely to compete, the IAAF world championships is the most attractive property in international athletics and I have every confidence that our Chinese colleague will do everything in their power to make the 20154 edition unforgettable," said Diack.

Beijing will be the fourth Asian city to host the world athletics championships after Tokyo in 1991, Osaka in 2007 and Daegu, South Korea, in 2011.

Moscow will hold the 14th edition of the world's third largest sporting event in 2013.

Beijing organized numerous IAAF events in the past years including the world junior championships six years ago.
