A mining company will pay 185 million yuan ($29 million) in compensation to families in South China who were affected by a deadly flood in 2010.

Twenty-two people were killed and 523 houses were destroyed in Xinyi, Guangdong province, when a tailing pond at Yinyan Tin Mine overflowed and collapsed a dam during Typhoon Fanapi on Sept 21, 2010.

Thousands of tons of fish were killed because of the water pollution.

Zijin Mining Group, the mine owners and China's largest gold producer, was subsequently hit with 2,497 lawsuits.

As well as compensation for families, the Fujian-based company was also ordered to pay about 58 million yuan to the city government in compensation for destroyed public property, Nanfang Daily reported Wednesday.
