A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said he was saddened that four Chinese nationals were killed during a plane crash on Friday morning in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu.

The ministry attached great importance to the plane crash and initiated an emergency response mechanism immediately, spokesman Hong Lei told a daily press briefing.

Diplomats from the Chinese embassy in Nepal had already arrived at the scene, he said.

The Foreign Ministry and the Chinese embassy in Nepal would assist the family members of the victims to deal with the aftermath, said the spokesman.

Nineteen people were killed after the Dorneir Aircraft 9N-AHA of Sita Air crashed at the bank of Manohara River near Kathmandu International Airport (TIA).

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) said that preliminary investigations and facts of the last communications with the crew members of Sita Aircraft showed that the plane crashed after it was struck by a bird, possibly an eagle.
