Officers capture 1-meter lizard

2012-09-28 15:18 Global Times     Web Editor: Zang Kejia comment

A 1-meter-long Varanus salvator lizard was found in a residential compound in Putuo district Tuesday.

Animal control officers captured the reptile and sent it to the Shanghai Zoo. It's undergoing quarantine and will be put on display if it passes.

Experts at the zoo said that Shanghai doesn't have the proper environment for such an animal, so it should never have been raised as a pet.

Although the animal can typically grow to more than 2 meters long, experts said that it would have posed no danger to local residents.
