A senior Chinese leader met the country's ethnic minority writers on Tuesday, calling on them to create more works to promote the development of ethnic minority literature.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while greeting the representatives who attended the fifth symposium on ethnic minority literature.

Li encouraged them to approach to life and ordinary people to produce more masterpieces, in a bid to meet the spiritual and cultural needs of all ethnic groups and help construct socialist culture.

Taking place from Sept. 18 to Sept. 20 in Beijing, the symposium will review minority literature since the event was last staged in 2003, carry out literary exchanges and make arrangements for the development of the genre.
