A woman received compensation in the amount of 8,000 yuan ($1,256) after she cracked her tooth when she was eating a bean bun.

Traditionally, bean buns are supposed to be soft desserts with layers of flour pastry stuffed with sweetened bean paste. So a woman surnamed Wang, who lives in Zhucheng, Shandong Province, was surprised when her tooth broke on one of these gooey desserts on August 17. The culprit? A grain of sand.

"I went to seek treatment with representatives from the grocery store and the bun company," Wang said. "The dentist told me I would need dental restoration, which would cost me 1,500 yuan."

However, Wang was not satisfied with the results of her dental work.

"The effects of the treatment didn't last long, and I would need more dental work if it ever broke again," she said.

Wang asked the company that makes the buns to pay for potential future costs, which amount to 12,000 yuan. The company didn't agree to her request.

Wang complained to the local industry and commerce bureau after no agreement could be reached. On August 22, a staff member with the bureau stated that producers of goods should undertake the responsibility of making sure their products are safe for consumers.

Eventually, the company agreed to compensate Wang for her losses, awarding her 8,000 yuan.
