2012-08-03 09:37 Xinhua     Web Editor: Wang YuXia comment

Potential donors enlisted in the China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) has totaled 1.492 million, making the marrow bank the world's fourth largest in terms of donors, the executive vice president of the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) said Thursday.

The CMDP has facilitated about 3,000 hemopoietic stem cells (HSC) donations for patients at home and abroad and it has uploaded the information of 50,000 donors to the World Marrow Donor Association, said Zhao Baige.

The CMDP, a leading bone marrow bank for Chinese, was established in 1992 by the RCSC.

The RCSC also has helped promote human organ donations by cooperating with the Health Ministry in work concerning publicity, registration and human organ distribution, said Zhao.

With a demand-supply ration as high as 150:1, China is in dire need of organ transplants, according to statistics of the Ministry of Health.
