Beijing Meteorological Bureau yesterday defended a controversial 300-yuan ($47) charge for testifying in legal procedures, citing a 1997 pricing regulation, the Beijing Evening News reported.
The bureau's pricing standard was called into question earlier this week when a man, surnamed Zhang, tried to claim flood damages to his car from his insurer PICC. The insurance company required a statement from the public weather service testifying that Zhang's car was flooded on Sunday when his parking space was inundated during a torrential downpour.
The weather bureau said the municipal pricing bureau authorized its minimum 300-yuan charge for releasing weather data to citizens.
