Beijing has come a long way in terms of dining options of late. A meal out no longer means a trip to your local chuanr stand. Instead people can find most kinds of food from most corners of the world, and not just the cliché dishes, but some more experimental ones. Grabbing our attention at the moment are pizzas, which are now so far removed from their Margherita roots as to be almost unrecognizable. Not that we are complaining though. They are as delicious, just a lot more fun. Here are our picks of the best pizzas with pizzazz.
Pass By Bar
Pass By Bar is located inside a courtyard on Nanluoguxiang and is famous for its Chinese-flavored pizzas. The appearance of the restaurant reminds people of old Beijing and visitors can not only enjoy pizzas, but also experience life in a courtyard. Opened in 1999, Pass By Bar is well-known for its meaty pizzas, such as mutton chuar and kung bao chicken. Wang Haiyan, the manager of the place, said when they first invented these pizzas it was meant as a joke. "One day I chatted with my American friend, who said that he was fed up with Western-tasting pizzas and asked why we didn't have scrambled eggs with tomatoes pizza? So that's what we do now!" said Wang. Apart from pizza, coffee and curry potatoes are also worth a try and they launch a new dish every two to three months.
