Two people died and four were injured in a car crash in Fengtai district yesterday morning.

The driver was allegedly drunk and the car overloaded, Fengtai fire department said.

The car, a white Nissan Infiniti, crashed into the central safety barrier at 2:40 am at Fengbei Bridge, South Fourth Ring Road. Graphic pictures posted online showed the car overturned, the front end completely smashed in, with at least two victims lying on the road near the wreckage.

The two deceased, a male driver and female front seat passenger were trapped in the car. Four other passengers were thrown clear of the vehicle, and were lying injured in the road, according a Fengtai district fire department press release.

"It was one of the most tragic scenes at a road accident I've ever seen," said Xu Haojun, from the Beidadi fire department, who was on the scene.

"We cut the doors off to get to the driver's body, which was smashed to the back seat," said Xu.

A male passenger, who was able to crawl out of the wreck himself, smelt of alcohol and said they were all drunk, including the driver, Xu said.

"He mumbled, 'I told them not to drink so much.' They all looked in their 20s," said Xu.

An anonymous officer from Beijing Traffic Management Bureau's publicity center said that the accident is "under investigation to see if it's a drunk driving and speeding case," but that there were "definitely six people in a five-seater car."

Last May, Chen Jia, a 31-year-old man, was sentenced to life imprisonment for driving drunk in his Infiniti, which hit a Fiat and caused the deaths of the driver and one of his daughters, as well as leaving the driver's wife paralyzed.

Earlier that month, famous musician Gao Xiaosong was detained for six months after driving drunk in yet another Infiniti prang, in which four were injured in a four-car pile up.
