SK Telecom showcases cutting edge technologies

2012-05-22 16:40 Global Times     Web Editor: Xu Rui comment

One of South Korea's biggest telecom companies, SK Telecom, showcased a wide variety of services using the latest technology in the information and communication field at the World IT Show (WIS) 2012, held between May 15 to 18 at the COEX Korea Exhibition Center.

At this year's WIS, SK Telecom demonstrated LTE Multi-Carrier (MC) that uses both 800 MHz and 1.8 GHz frequency bands, the first time SK Telecom has used this technology in the Republic of Korea.

LTE MC realizes an optimal quality of service by considering the level of data traffic congestion in the area of user location and choosing a less congested frequency band. SK Telecom is planning to commercialize the technology within the third quarter of 2012. The company will also introduce a sophisticated LTE technology that allows integrated use of its network resources and aims to commercialize the technology in 2013. In all, SK Telecom expects to provide much faster network speed.

Many other services that will enhance people's daily lives were on display to show how barriers are being broken down between industries to create innovations and new value for customers.

The company demonstrated popular related services such as Smart Insight and Geovision. Smart Insight is an enterprise social analysis platform. It is rapidly gaining popularity in various industries including beauty, fashion and leisure as it offers insightful information - based on analysis of online public opinion - that can be utilized in corporate PR, marketing and CRM activities.

Meanwhile, Geovision is a business platform that provides services like customer management, marketing support and market analysis. SK Telecom, together with diverse partners including a credit card firm and a real estate company, is actively offering analysis of floating populations, purchasing patterns, local area information and real estate-related information to help its corporate customers succeed in their businesses.

Finally, Smart Robot, an interactive education service for children the company developed by combining a smartphone and a robot, was on show at WIS 2012. Unlike existing educational robots, it uses smartphone as its brain, allowing customers to easily use the service by attaching the smartphone to the robot.

SK Telecom chose "Carnival" as the main concept of WIS 2012, under which it organized various demonstrations to enable visitors to experience first-hand and easily understand how ICT is blended into our daily lives.

Currently, SK and its affiliates are located in over 40 countries and regions in the world, with more than 250 representative offices and subsidiaries. Among the world's Fortune 500 companies, SK ranked 82 in 2011. SK started its business in China even before the Republic of Korea established diplomatic relations with China in 1992.
