The Beijing municipal government will invest more than 2.84 billion yuan (about 450 million U.S. dollars) in easing traffic congestion this year by improving the city's microcirculation traffic, an official announced Thursday.

A total of 14 kilometers of roads involved in 24 projects will be improved in six districts of Beijing, said an official with the municipal development and reform commission.

The projects mainly involve schools, old residential communities and parks, the official said.

The construction includes opening up dead-end roads to through traffic and widening narrow roads, the official said.

The city invested 1.6 billion yuan in 2011 to complete 12 microcirculation projects.
