Illegal cut-price pet food taken off shelves

2012-02-13 08:58 Global Times     Web Editor: Zang Kejia comment

More than 60 kilograms of illegally produced pet food has been removed from shelves in supermarkets, animal hospitals and pet stores in Changping, Xicheng and Fengtai districts.

The removal follows a recent pet food inspection, Beijing Animal Health Inspection Institute told the Global Times yesterday.

The products include 29 brands that lacked production licenses, production details, such as a company name and address, or had used fake production information. They were banned from stores, said Li Bo, the publicity officer of the institute.

Meanwhile, any Beijing-based companies that have forged licenses for pet food manufacture will be investigated, according to the institute.

"Pets which often eat low quality food produced by factories with no certification may suffer from anemia and a decrease in immunity," said Wang Yu, an animal lover who volunteers at Beijing's pet hospitals.

People either buy pet food in supermarkets, or they buy smuggled foreign products from pet stores, claimed Wang.

"It's better to buy pet food from big supermarkets, and avoid buying cheap products," said Wang.

"If you want to buy food in bulk, make sure you buy from stores whose products are often sold out quickly, as these stores often have no overstocked food, which can be blended with new food," he said.

In Wang's opinion, the quality of domestic-made pet food is much lower than its foreign counterparts.

"One reason is that the standards regulating the industry are lower than that of other countries," said Wang.

"The other is many domestic producers still use the same procedures for making livestock feed to produce pet food, which needs more technology to manufacture," he noted.
