Nearly 100 villagers poisoned by gas leak in Guangxi

Guigang (CNS) -- Almost a hundred residents were sent to the hospital because of a poisonous gas leak in a nearby steel rolling mill in Guigang, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on the evening of July 28, local officials confirmed the next day.

So far, no deaths have been reported. Some of the victims have shown serious symptoms such as vomiting and dizziness, according to the latest local TV news.

According to the rescuers, the leak happened around 8pm in a steel rolling mill of the Guigang Steel Group, which is located in the suburbs. Surrounding villages were seriously affected and many a resident were poisoned to varying degrees.

The local fire control and security departments have taken prompt measures to diminish the negative affects of the gas. Intensive searches were carried out to look for anyone left behind or untreated. Other villagers were transferred to areas without security risks.

The poisonous gas was mainly composed of methane and monoxide. The source of the leak has been controlled.
